Christina Lazar

FOUNDER


Christina Lazar is an honor graduate from the College of Education at the University of North Carolina. Originally from Upstate NY, she was a mentor, teacher, coach and advocate of children for over 20 years. With the support of her former school, parents of students, and colleagues, she opened The Lazar Center of Charlotte in 2007. Since then she has supported hundreds of students, as they grow equally in  confidence and academic achievement. Her favorite thing about her work is finding that unique key that allows her team to unlock each students’ potential.

Hannah McKinney

CENTER DIRECTOR

Hannah is the Center Director of The Lazar Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. With a degree in Special Education from Coastal Carolina University and several years of teaching experience in grades 6-12, Hannah is committed to supporting, leading, and planning daily student sessions with our team of educators. She has an outgoing and welcoming personality which students of all ages gravitate toward. Hannah is passionate about education and takes pride in shaping and molding young minds to reach their full potential both academically and personally.

Melinda Graham

TUTOR

Melinda Graham is a University of South Florida graduate with a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education, and she also holds a Bachelor of Music from Converse College. She is thrilled to work with the Lazar Center team following her retirement from the classroom. With over twenty years of teaching experience in multiple grade levels, Melinda is dedicated to enthusiastic and dynamic teaching. Beyond helping students to build their knowledge, skills, and abilities, she aims to nurture their joy of learning. When it’s time to relax, Melinda loves to bake for her family, tend her garden, and take energetic walks with her pup, Tully.

Leyia Grant

Tutor


Leyia is a graduate of Winthrop University with a Bachelor’s in Mathematics and a Master’s in secondary education. After teaching algebra and geometry for two years, she decided to switch roles and become a tutor. Her favorite thing about being a part of The Lazar Center is getting to work with students one-on-one, and catering the instruction to their specific needs. When she’s not at the Lazar Center, Leyia is either at the gym or spending quality time with family and friends.

Eliza Liriano

TUTOR

Eliza is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Spanish for the Medical Professions. She is passionate about teaching and has experience working with students in all grade levels. She specializes in science, math, and Spanish. Her favorite part about tutoring is seeing students grasp challenging concepts and become more confident learners. She also enjoys seeing students develop a love for learning after developing a greater understanding of their material. 

Mikayla Legrande

Tutor

Mikayla is a graduate of High Point University with a Bachelors of Science in Actuarial Science and a Minor in Mathematics. She’s currently pursuing her Masters in Actuarial Science at Lock Haven University. She has four younger siblings and experience tutoring in all grade levels. Her favorite part of tutoring is seeing how proud sttudents can become of themselves when they figure out a problem on their own and then are able to explain exactly what they did. She looks forward to focusing on math, science and study/organizational skills with Lazar Center students this year!

Jonanthan Duncan

TUTOR

Jonathan graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2021, earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy. Jonathan is a self-proclaimed lifelong learner who loves tutoring mathematics and science. His favorite thing about working with students is seeing them foster their own passions for learning through meaningful conversations that investigate concepts at an intuitive level.  In his free time, Jonathan likes to read, write creatively, and play chess.

Noah Baker

Lead Tutor

Noah is an Honors graduate from UNC Wilmington with a physics major & math minor. With a passion for education and the goal of becoming a college professor, Noah truly loves the world of tutoring. His love for teaching has extended even further. He embraces the idea that anyone can learn anything if they really want—whether it’s learning how to solve Rubik’s cube, self-teaching guitar, or strengthening skills for school; someone puts their mind to it, can learn. Tutoring is Noah’s favorite way to reach students and encourage them to learn their subjects and life skills in general. 

Rachael Smith

Tutor

Rachael graduated from UNC Greensboro, receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a minor in History, in addition to obtaining her NC Teaching License. She is also an alumna of Queens University of Charlotte, where she obtained a Master’s in Educational Leadership and graduated from the School Executive Leadership Academy (SELA). Her experience within and beyond the classroom influences her continuing advocacy for a just and enriched educational experience for all students. Rachael truly loves connecting with students at the Lazar Center and helping to develop the hard and soft skills that will propel them toward a successful future!

Morgan Fleming

Tutor

Morgan Fleming, MPH, is a Charlotte, NC transplant from Columbia, MD. Morgan graduated with a BS in Chemistry from Elon University in 2016; shortly after graduation, Morgan relocated to Charlotte to teach high school science for three years as an accredited teacher. In her day job, Morgan works for a public health and research firm on several projects like lupus interventions, vape prevention, and health equity. Morgan loves tutoring students and encouraging them to find what excites them about school. Morgan’s expertise lies in high school science, math, writing, SAT/ACT preparation, and organization skills. She can’t wait to meet you!

Laura Strickland

Tutor

Laura is an Appalachian State University graduate with a Masters in the Science of Reading. For the last three years she has worked as a fourth grade teacher in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools where she was named one of CMS’s best new  teachers. She is so excited to help young students build on what they already know at Lazar! Her favorite thing to do is help build confidence and make learning exciting. When she’s not teaching, she loves cooking, reading, and cycling. 

Sadie Ross

Sadie is an honors graduate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she majored in elementary education and minored in child and family development. As an educator, she shared her passion for learning and love for science content with her students. At the Lazar Center, she is our Office Administrator, the first point of contact for families, and an amazing support each and every day for our team of educators. She enjoys eating delicious food, traveling to new places, and cozying up with a good book.
